Useful Information

A protective agent is required for every natural vegetable tanned leather. Therefore we recommend Bense & Eicke Beeswax Leather Care Balm (but you can also use any other leather balm or leather fat) for all handcrafted leather goods that you purchase. Since it moisturizes, protects the leather and smells good. Treat your most commonly used handmade leather goods with it once or twice a year. Horween or Harness leather is usually quite well protected with wax and sebum, which is from the tanning in the leather, but may also require a leather conditioner after a few years.

You should keep water and dirt away while making sure the leather doesn't dry out, which can cause cracks. It takes a long time (years) for the product to dry and crack. So don't worry. If you later find that your leather is getting very dry, you can also bring it back with a layer of Neatsfoot oil.

You can use saddle soap to clean your leather once in a while. We recommend Fiebing’s saddle soap for your handcrafted leather goods, which has served our workshop well for years.

To apply care products, please follow the manufacturer's instructions. In principle, the leather should be cleaned of dust and other impurities before using care products and, if necessary, wiped off with a slightly damp cloth. The care articles are best applied with a microfiber cloth and in small circular movements. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

The current lead time is two weeks for smaller items such as wallets, glasses cases, belts etc. For large items such as the toolroll, please allow at least six weeks.

Origin of our Leather

We only use vegetable tanned leather of the highest quality to produce our handcrafted leather goods. We prefer to purchase leather as a raw material from Italian tanneries (except for Horween Leather, which is based in Chicago, Illinois, USA). Since leather is a natural product, however, slight variations may occur, e.g. slight variation in the color and / or different thicknesses of the leather. whitebeardleather will never use leather that may affect the quality or longevity of the handcrafted leather goods.

Potential of Leather

There are few natural materials or organic substances that offer as much potential as leather. By optimizing the tanning process, on the way from animal skin to leather, the tanner creates an infinite variety of substances, structures, textures and surfaces. With the help of contemporary technologies, the leather industry around the world is creating a dizzying selection of leather for all sorts of purposes - from traditional bridle leather for the production of suitcases and equestrian equipment to soft and supple upholstery skins for the production of furniture and used in the field of automotive interiors. The diverse colors and designs offer the leather processor more possibilities for handicrafts and design than ever before.

Vegetable-tanned Leather

We prefer the traditionally produced, vegetable-tanned leather; This natural tanning process only includes bark from oak, chestnut, birch and mimosa trees (or other ground tree bark, depending on the tannery) and other plant extracts. The so called liquor is created from these vegetable substances, in which the skins are immersed in pits or tubled in drums over a longer period - sometimes up to 12 months. The tannins are astringent and penetrate the fibers to wick away moisture, resulting in a stronger leather. Tanners use different types of tannins and with subtle variations in the recipe, different leathers can be made. The composition of the tanning liquor has to be carefully monitored by the tanner to produce leather of consistent quality.

Refinement process of our Leather

The Leather is refined during the currying process, in which the hides are rubbed with dyes, oils, waxes and fats in order to increase the suppleness of the leather and improve its usability. The amount of finishes used also determines the type of leather. Chrome tanning is more about chemicals than natural substances. This is much faster. Latigo leather is made with a combination of vegetable and chrome tanning. All leather used in our workshop is exclusively vegetable tanned leather.

Hand-sewn only. Handmade only.

Hand-sewn thread lasts significantly longer than machine-sewn thread. With a hand-sewn seam, a significantly thicker thread can be used for the seam. The hand-sewn seam therefore has a remarkably longer lifespan than a machine-sewn seam. In addition to the superior strength and durability, hand-sewn also looks much nicer.

Only two manufacturers currently meet our critical requirements for hand sewing thread. Because of this, we only use Ritza Tiger Thread from the Julius Koch brand and Lin câblé Fil Au Chinois from the Maison Sajou brand. Please understand that we do not have all color variants in stock, but we are constantly expanding our range. If you miss a color, please contact us.
